A list of some of the current
and past
research projects the group has been involved in.
AFFORDABLE DIFFUSION BONDING
Diffusion bonding (DB) is where materials are
joined to
cause
intimate contact and allowing diffusion of atoms to form a perfect
bond. The project looked at reducing the manufacturing costs and
times and making it affordable
ULTRALIGHTWEIGHT ENERGY
ABSORBER
To absorb impact energy requires the design and testing
of
structured cellular materials. These materials are ultra-lightweight
and experience micro-inertial hardening
CEMENT MIXER DRUM
Increasingly stringent environmental and emissions laws,
and a
need
to increase load carrying capacity of the vehicles; involving
lightweight composite mixer drum
ADVANCED SURFACE COOLERS
Sophisticated
coupled CFD- heat transfer of a device involving high speed air-flows
and cold liquids. This is supported by experimental analysis of the
fluid and heat flows.
VIDEO COLLABORATION
This supports industrial & collaborative research.
It
involves lightweight shared desktop software and advanced video
conferencing. It includes secure delivery through firewalls– when
required
BRAZE BONDING OF METAL
COMPOSITES
This involves improved control of the bonding process and
controlling the differentials stresses between the metallic
components—to produce a beneficial stress field
