Partners:  HS-Marston, Rolls-Royce PLC, BAE Systems, AJAX TOCCO LtD.,   UNIPART Aerospace.

Diffusion bonding (DB) is a process where materials are joined by placing in an environment of high pressure and temperature to cause intimate contact and allowing diffusion of atoms across the joint to form a perfect bond. This bond is of high integrity and can be used to join dissimilar materials also; and, is particularly suitable for high performance applications. Currently DB is both expensive and time consuming.

The project aims to develop DB to speed up the process and make it more affordable and scaleable to bond larger objects, opening up applications into new areas of manufacture such as for heat exchangers, engine casings, fuel cells etc…Deliverables will be a prototype ADB demonstrator test rig, and validated manufacturing process specifications and design rules embodied in design software to optimise the process parameters for different products to be manufactured.
