The has been an increasing interest in developing resource efficient cellular materials. As Roderic Lakes pointed out in an article in the journal 'Nature' hierarchicaly structured materials can be ultra-lightweight (and hence efficient use of material resources) and yet as strong, in many cases, as solid materials (such as beams or trusses) . This he related back to the excellent work of Dyson and the much earlier work of Eiffel. We are working on developing the ways of manufacturing (and designing) such resource efficient materials using simulation. |
